I’m not a BTS ARMY, but I’d like to say I’m proud of them for winning a Billboard Music Award. I’ve noticed that their are many young Asians who aspire to be in the entertainment industry who are from the western side of the world, usually go the kpop route. This is because they know their chances of making it in the west are much slimmer than if they tried to make it in Asia. For some reason, there is a stigma against Asians in western media which is why we only represent about 5.1% in films and shows, according to a Hollywood Reporter article from 2016 (x). In terms of music, I can’t think of one really famous Asian artist that made it in the west or on a global scale (if you know any let me know). I heard that there were people that voted against them because of some rivalries they have with other kpop groups. This just made me sad. To those that voted against them for this reason, you are missing the bigger picture. This isn’t just about being bitter your faves were not nominated for a Billboard Award; this is about breaking that barrier that America and the west has between Asians in the entertainment industry. I’d like to thank BTS for their hard work and thank those that supported them. Hopefully this will help to open doors and more opportunities for Asians in entertainment. As an Asian person, it would have been nice to have grown up with Asians characters to relate to on TV, as well as Asian musical artists.
